A CELEBRATION OF #EARTHSBESTSELFIE
It was a profound moment on Dec 7th, 1972 when we realized that we, humanity, had climbed from the trees, across the savannah, and over time, invented the technology to propel us to the stars! It is why this simple picture taken by the Apollo 17 mission matters because it shows both our vast history and our vast potential.
The Blue Marble image is often credited with sparking the global environmentalist movement as it viscerally portrayed the Earth's fragility and immediately elevated interest in climate change and climate science studies. All this is represented in #EarthsBestSelfie!
IT IS TIME FOR A CELEBRATION OF THAT PIVOTAL MOMENT
Blue Marble Night is a night where we can all come together to recognize the fragility and majesty of this pale blue dot where we live.
Our inaugural event will be virtual and feature testimonials from throughout the world about how the Blue Marble photo in particular and the Overview Effect in general changed peoples’ lives
WHAT IS THE OVERVIEW EFFECT?
Astronauts viewing the Earth from space often experience a shift in identity or worldview: The Overview Effect.

They gain an understanding of the miraculousness of life and the uniqueness of our existence. They recognize that, as humans, our commonalities far outweigh our differences. This awe-inspiring perspective reframes our understanding of the Cosmos, and our relationship with our home planet and each other. The resulting Overview Perspective plays a vital role in helping us cultivate a future of sustainable peace and prosperity for all of humanity.
Frank White first theorized the Overview Effect phenomenon in 1987. Now, much of the world has adopted this framework in describing our innate interconnectedness and it has helped provide astronauts with concepts and language to articulate the profound shift in worldview they experience when viewing the Earth from space and in space.
The Overview Effect: Space Exploration and Human Evolution is considered by many to be a seminal work in the field of space exploration, making Frank one of the most influential space philosophers of our time.
